My research work deals with the development of stochastic numerical tools for quantum many-body problems and their application to the study of a wealth of quantum systems with quantum macroscopic behavior. I have been working in the study of strongly interacting systems such as liquid and solid Helium and Hydrogen in different geometries and both at finite and zero temperature. In the last years, I have also been active in the microscopic description of dilute Bose and Fermi gases trying to go beyond of the standard mean-field theory used predominantly in the field.

Short CV

I finished my degree (Bachelor+Master) in Physics in the University of Barcelona in 1984, with major in Fundamental Physics. Then, I started my PhD, also in the University of Barcelona, and finished it in 1991 with a Thesis supervised by Prof. Artur Polls. The topic of my Thesis was the study of isotopic liquid Helium mixtures using the framework of integral equations. I won a permanent position in UPC as “Profesor Titular de Escuela Universitaria” in 1990. In 1993, I won a contest and became “Profesor Titular de Universidad” (Associate Professor) also in the UPC. Finally, I became full professor “Catedrático de Universidad” of UPC in 2011. From the beginning I was a member of the former Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering and now Department of Physics. Together with Prof. Joaquim Casulleras, we established in 1991 our research group on Quantum Monte Carlo methods where I am still deeply involved. In 2007 I acted as a chairman of the Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories held in Barcelona, the Conference of reference in our field. I have been supervisor of thirteen PhD students and I have been the responsible of six post-docs researchers in our group. I am author of more than 200 research publications. I am currently Associate Editor of the New Journal of Physics. In 2014, I was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, in the Computational Physics Division. In June 2017 I won the Feenberg Medal Award, the most prestigious award in my field. I am Secretary and Treasurer of the Advisory Committee for the International Series on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories.
