Dr. Muriel Botey holds a Bachelor’s degree in theoretical physics by the University of Barcelona, and a PhD from the Universitat Politèncica de Catalunya (UPC) under the supervision of Jordi Martorell (ICFO). Her main interests encompass linear and nonlinear light-matter interactions in nanostructured conservative systems and general open and dissipative non-Hermitian systems. Her research explores the use of artificial media such as metamaterials, metasurfaces, lattices or random media to guide and spatially shape light. She is also involved in the control of the spatial and temporal instabilities, and turbulence control, in dynamic systems by the introduction of non-Hermitian potentials. Her findings, while performed on universal physical models and therefore general to different kinds of waves, entail specific applications for edge-emitting semiconductor lasers, vertical-cavity-surface emitting lasers and laser arrays. She is currently a member of the Nonlinear Dynamics, Nonlinear Optics and Lasers (DONLL) research group of the Physics Department, and deputy director for the Quality Assessment and Social Responsibility of the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE). She also teaches in the Master’s degree in Photonics, a joint master program between UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO.
