Santiago Torres is an Associate Professor in the Physics Department, a position he has held since 2008, where he has built an extensive career in research and teaching.
Dr. Torres research interests are primarily focused on astronomy and astrophysics, particularly on the study of white dwarfs - peculiar, highly dense objects that are remnants of stars like our Sun. Using Monte Carlo techniques, Dr. Torres developed a detailed population synthesis model of the white dwarf population in our Galaxy. In parallel, he has applied novel artificial intelligence techniques, such as neural networks and random forest algorithms, to catalog large samples of astronomical data.
In addition, Dr. Torres has accumulated extensive teaching experience in undergraduate and masters courses over nearly 30 years, covering subjects such as Algebra and Analysis, Physics, Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Space Systems Engineering, Computational Astrophysics, and, more recently, Quantum Computing Technologies.
